***Old Orchard Picnic Shelter/Day Use Area: The well that provides water for this area of the park is not in operation. Repairs are being coordinated though we do not have an estimated time for when repairs will be complete at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience. Castle Rock State park is located 3.5 miles south of Oregon, Il on IL Hwy 2. The park site on the west bank of the Rock River. The park is very representative of the Rock River Hills area with rock formations, ravines, and unique northern plant associations. A sandstone bluff, adjacent to the river, gives the park its name. The Castle Rock is set in a large sandstone butte situated between the Rock River and Il Hwy 2. The rock is St. Peter sandstone. There are only a few places in Illinois where St. Peters sandstone comes to the surface, even though it underlies most of the state. There are three picnic areas in the park with shelters, tables, grills, toilets and drinking water. There are also scattered picnic tables in areas of the park and along the river. Two of the picnic shelters are reservable. There are 7 miles of trails for hiking and x-country skiing that offer the opportunity to view wildlife and scenic views. All fishing at the site is in the Rock River. The park offers 1 1/2 mi of bank fishing area. A boat ramp is also available. Boat size is limited due to the varying depth of the river. The only camping facility at Castle Rock is a small primitive canoe/boat in camp area. All campers must access the area by water. Reservations are not accepted. No drinking water is available. The park does offer limited hunting programs for squirrel, turkey and deer hunting.
